UCLA's IDEA sponsored a year-long teacher seminar on Brown's legacy in Los
Angeles. Teachers studied the struggle for access and equity in Los Angeles schools in the 50 years since Brown and then engaged their own students in examining these issues in their school communities. The students presented their findings to members of the community and parents at the “Youth Summit” held at the UCLA Faculty Center. Sharing her experiences with the other attendees was Sylvia Mendez, who testified as a 7-year-old in the landmark case, Mendez v. Westminster, that led to the end of segregation in California.

On June 3, Jeff Duncan-Andrade, IDEA Director of Urban Teacher Development,
moderated a panel discussion exploring youth gangs in the community
and community concerns associated with youth-profiling. The discussion
was held at the Watts Labor Community Action Center, and included
Tom Hayden, author and former California senator; Professor Diego
Vigil, University of California, Irvine; and Tim Watkins, CEO, Watts
Labor Community Action Center. The panel spoke to and learned from
over 100 attendees.

| At a May 6 press conference, nationally known pollster Lou Harris announced results of a poll of 1,056 California teachers; and IDEA Associate Director John Rogers reported additional analyses of the Harris data. More than two dozen media outlets attended or participated in the teleconference that followed. In its coverage, the Los Angeles Times noted teacher support for reforms to fix school finance inequities. Rogers later was widely interviewed by the media including a discussion with California education secretary Richard Riordan on the influential public affairs radio show, KCRW’s “Which Way, L.A.?”
