Teaching for Equity and Change is a three-year outreach program for administrators,
TEP graduates and other teachers that are committed to incorporating social
justice pedagogy into their curriculum and school culture. The program aims
to help teachers create ways to engage their students in examining issues
of equitable schooling conditions. The program is designed to keep a group
of Los Angeles teachers together for three years, including optional participation
in the IDEA summer seminar at UCLA. During the school year, participants meet
twice a month for approximately two hours to discuss readings, share projects
and ideas, and to design curriculum. Participants receive pedagogical support,
classroom support, UCLA extension credit, and the opportunity to publish their
work and the work of their students on Teaching
to Change LA.
Another important goal of this program is the research that comes from the
collaboration between teachers and researchers. This research examines the
value of such a program for improving teaching and teacher retention in urban
schools. Ultimately, this project will aid in the design of an urban teacher
handbook for use in teacher education and development nation wide.
