Multiple Pathways

A high school reform approach that infuses rigorous coursework with practical applications.

IDEA supports and studies educational innovations that promise to correct persistent educational inequalities. Central to this work is understanding how all sectors of the public can promote high quality schooling in their communities and across the State. Multiple Pathways (MP) is an educational approach that prepares all students for college, career, and civic participation and challenges prevailing patterns of school stratification.  Based on our own and others’ prior work, we believe that MP can create better and broader outcomes for all students and can be especially helpful for students most at risk for failure and dropping out.

Since 2006, IDEA has been conducting research on Multiple Pathways with the goal of 1) investigating and identifying the potential and the challenges associated with an MP approach to high school improvement in California; 2) producing trustworthy, useful, and non-partisan research and guidance to policymakers and educators about MP in California high schools; and 3) providing research assistance and guidance to community partners engaged in increasing an understanding of Multiple Pathways amongst students, parents, and educators.
