Youth Summit July11, 2004
UCLA's IDEA sponsored a year-long teacher seminar on Brown's legacy in Los Angeles. Teachers studied the struggle for access and equity in Los Angeles schools in the 50 years since Brown and then engaged their own students in examining these issues in their school communities. The students presented their findings to members of the community and parents at the “Youth Summit” held at the UCLA Faculty Center. Sharing her experiences with the other attendees was Sylvia Mendez, who testified as a 7-year-old in the landmark case, Mendez v. Westminster, that led to the end of segregation in California.
