Youth Research
IDEA’s youth researchers examine educational conditions in Los Angeles high schools.
Students are uniquely positioned to partner with adults to examine and address educational inequalities in their schools and communities. IDEA believes that these partnerships are crucial to both making just, democratic, and sustainable educational change and helping students acquire the language and tools they need to function within the academy. We are committed to creating opportunities for young people from urban schools to develop community-based critical research projects, write research papers, and deliver presentations to audiences of university faculty, community activists, and elected officials. Youth researchers examine central questions impacting the lives of LAUSD students. They study relevant literature on these questions and employ social science research methods to gather data in their schools and communities. This work is designed to bring to light the educational problems students experience first-hand and provide authentic learning opportunities that position students as critical thinkers.
