California students grow a bit more fit

But fewer than half meet goals of six tests. Results in South Bay vary. Though California students continue to show slight improvement on physical fitness tests, they're still lagging well behind state goals, according to a report released Monday. The California Department of Education's annual "Fitnessgram" showed results from six types of physical tests given to about 1.4 million students in fifth, seventh and ninth grades. Far less than half of those students were able to meet the goals of the six tests, which include push-ups, curl-ups and modified pull-ups. The scores, which were from the 2008-09 school year, showed that 29.1 percent of fifth-graders, 34.1 percent of seventh-graders and 37.9 percent of ninth-graders passed all six tests statewide.
