Financial report shows danger for San Diego schools

The San Diego Unified School District Board of Education Friday night approved a financial report that raised questions regarding long-term fiscal health. The first interim financial report, a picture of district finances as of Oct. 31, showed there could be as little as $237,000 of discretionary funds available by the end of the 2011-12 academic year. The report is to show the current financial status and projections for the next two fiscal years. Board member Katherine Nakamura said, “$237,000? We spend that in a sneeze in this place.” James Masias, the district’s chief financial officer, said, “The numbers are extremely tight.” Masias warned board members that the figure could draw the attention of credit rating firms.
