Growing pains: First year bumpy for Stockton Unified's 'small learning communities'

Last spring as she neared the end of her freshman year, Linda Diaz learned that Franklin High School soon was to be divided into "small learning communities" that would provide students with pathways to future careers. Amid choices relating to business, criminal justice and public service, one option caught Diaz's eye: multimedia and the arts. "I was, like, 'Oh, heck yeah,' " the 15-year-old Diaz, now a sophomore, recalled earlier this month. But things haven't worked out exactly as planned. Diaz's first choice was Franklin's new multimedia academy. Her last choice was business. She got business. "And I'm not into that," she said. Diaz's story is not an isolated one at Franklin or in Stockton Unified as it tries to get its fledgling small learning communities running properly one year after former Superintendent Tony Amato first declared that they would be established at all four of the district's comprehensive high schools in time for the 2009-10 school year.
