More school districts furlough employees

The state's dire financial situation shows no signs of letting up, and layoffs once again may be in the future for some educators. But some area school districts are also resorting to another method to save costs - furloughs. A furlough is a temporary leave of absence from employment without pay. Furloughs have been implemented this year at Inland Valley school districts including Etiwanda, Chino Valley Unified and Chaffey Joint Union. Etiwanda superintendent Shawn Judson said district officials have negotiated with teachers on reducing the work year by 3 1/2 days. "We've already approved the contracts," Judson said. "Now, it's a matter of determining how those days will be cut." The district is considering the furlough days in the spring after state testing is completed, so instructional days are not affected leading up to testing. "We're trying to pick days that are hopefully convenient for parents realizing that there will be some additional days that students are home," Judson said. (more...)
