Need for more teachers expected over the next decade

More teachers with full credentials are working in California public schools than a decade ago, but some experts worry that budget cuts, layoffs and an expected surge in teacher retirements could soon jeopardize that success. In 2000-01, more than a fifth of California schools had a work force in which 20 percent or more of teachers had not yet received preliminary teaching credentials, according to a recent report from the Center for the Future of Teaching & Learning, a public policy organization in California. Last school year, only 3 percent of California schools were in that situation. “California has made significant strides in reducing the numbers of under-prepared teachers,” said Margaret Gaston, the center’s president and executive director. “It doesn’t mean we’re all the way to our goal, but we’re getting closer every year.” (more...)
