Once avoided, Miami Edison Senior High hopes to be embraced under new system

The high school in the heart of Little Haiti, best known for a televised lunchroom brawl and repeated failures on the state's standardized test, has set out to resuscitate its reputation and make students from other schools want to enroll. Can it possibly work? It may take years to know for sure, but the answer will begin to emerge in January. Shortly after the new year, Edison is throwing open its freshly painted doors, giving students from across the county the chance to take advantage of its four new college-style academies. The revamped academic programs are an ambitious departure from Edison's old curriculum. The new structure requires the teens to specialize in one of four areas: international studies; public affairs and health; the arts; or a rigorous honors program. (more...)
