Parcel tax paperwork error costs South Pasadena school district $15,000

A paperwork error officials admit could have been avoided has instead cost the South Pasadena Unified School District $15,000. District officials missed an Aug. 31 deadline to file paperwork with the Los Angeles County Auditor-Controller's Office authorizing the office to collect payments from the Measure S parcel tax voters approved in June. When local property owners received their property tax statements last month, the $288 parcel tax on single-family homes and $95 on multi-family properties wasn't included. "I made an assumption, and the interim superintendent of business made an assumption, that the previous business person had taken care of it," said interim Superintendent John Fitzpatrick. To make up for the error, the district hired an outside firm to mail out separate bills to property owners. That cost the district $15,000. Fitzpatrick said sending out revised property tax bills through the county would have cost nearly $100,000. (more...)
