Program focuses on 'reclaiming education' in Richmond schools
Since the Oct. 24 gang rape of a 16-year-old girl outside Richmond High School's homecoming dance, stunned people in the East Bay and across the country have sought and offered answers, pointed fingers and brainstormed ideas. Many criticize the community as a whole and its youths especially. But one organization is seeking to reframe the conversation by looking at the bigger picture: What is it like to be a student — particularly a student of color — in the West Contra Costa Unified School District? What kinds of obstacles do those children and families encounter within the school system? How can educators be more responsive to their needs? "There's a disconnect between the schools and the community," said Malaika Parker, director of community action at Justice Matters, an umbrella organization that in 2005 launched the REAL Schools Now program in West Contra Costa.
