Race to the Top grants questioned

As California lawmakers continue working on legislation to make the state eligible for hundreds of millions of dollars in federal Race to the Top grants, area school officials say they don't know if they'll try to get some of that money. State Senate and Assembly versions of Race to the Top-related bills differ in a few key areas, and school officials say they aren't sure what exactly they'll have to do to qualify for the federal grants. Regardless, the state needs school districts to sign on now - before details are set. That's causing heartburn for area school administrators, who say they want more information. "I think a lot of the definitions on these changes, we have yet to come across them," said Arturo Delgado, superintendent of the San Bernardino City Unified School District.
