Riverside Unified cuts 124 teacher jobs

Next school year, 124 Riverside Unified teachers in kindergarten through third grade will lose their jobs and third-grade class sizes will increase to 30 students. The layoffs approved Monday night by the school board will save the district $5.9 million. They are among $9 million in budget cuts that the district needs to make to close a $37 million budget deficit for next year, Deputy Superintendent Mike Fine said. The board also agreed to eliminate three principal and assistant principal jobs that are now vacant to save $404,252, and agreed to later identify $2.6 million in budget cuts from specific programs for which the state allows districts flexibility.
