Riverside Unified cuts 124 teacher jobs

Next school year, 124 Riverside Unified teachers in kindergarten through third grade will lose their jobs and third-grade class sizes will increase to 30 students. The layoffs approved Monday night by the school board will save the district $5.9 million. They are among $9 million in budget cuts that the district needs to make to close a $37 million budget deficit for next year, Deputy Superintendent Mike Fine said. The board also agreed to eliminate three principal and assistant principal jobs that are now vacant to save $404,252, and agreed to later identify $2.6 million in budget cuts from specific programs for which the state allows districts flexibility. Superintendent Rick Miller said he wants people to call lawmakers in Sacramento to say these cuts are not OK. (more...)
