Saving energy adds up to big bucks for Whittier-area school districts

School districts are looking more and more toward energy-cutting plans to help them trim their bottom lines, with some saving more than $400,000 in just under a year. It's as simple as shutting down and unplugging equipment like computers, lights and other electric appliances when not in use, as well as reducing water usage by repairing broken sprinklers, according to officials from the Whittier Union High School District. These minor moves have made a major difference at the 13,500-student WUHSD, which contracted with Energy Education Inc. about a year ago to implement a new conservation plan.
