Teachable Moments: Report shows California class sizes increasing

An interesting report from the Center for Investigative Reporting titled “Are California Class Sizes Increasing?” reveals data on the state’s Class Size Reduction program from the 30 largest K-12 California school districts. The report, released Nov. 19, provides information on kindergarten through 3rd-grade class sizes for the 2008-2009 school year. In almost every district, the number of students in K-3 classes has climbed, particularly in the past few years as the state’s education budget crisis severely impacted districts struggling to find ways to cut costs. Of the 30 largest districts, Poway Unified School District and San Diego Unified School District made the list from San Diego County. According to the report, Poway has increased its K-3 class sizes to 24 students per class and receives about $10 million annually from the state for the CSR program.
