Teachers deal with increasing class sizes

On a typical day at Serrano Middle School, eighth-grade teacher Julie Myskow is not only a teacher, but a counselor, mother and best friend. With close to 100 students to teach in three different reading/language arts classes, she has to do much more than educate her charges. She also has to discipline them and make sure they are not quietly texting a friend under their desks. At middle and high schools in districts throughout the San Bernardino area, classes with anywhere from 36 to even 40 students are increasingly the norm. "These big class sizes all mean more papers to grade, more parent contact and more hours worked outside of the classroom," said Rebecca Harper, president of the San Bernardino Teachers Association.
