West Contra Costa Unified School District deal deserves praise

The new labor contract in the West Contra Costa Unified School District will be extremely painful for teachers and students alike, but it provides the only hope for leading the system away from another financial cliff. District officials and trustees should be commended for hanging tough. Teachers, who are forgoing a salary increase for three years and facing significant benefit cuts, should be recognized for their willingness to make necessary, but difficult, sacrifices. And students, most of whom won't begin to understand why the educational world around them is changing so much, must be encouraged to stay focused on their schooling as many of them face larger classes, new teachers and less maintenance of their campuses in coming years.
