District owes SW Fresno its middle school

In this terrible economic environment, some will say it's not the right time to build a much-needed middle school in southwest Fresno. The problem with that argument is the Fresno Unified School District refused to build the middle school when it was flush with cash. Clearly, fixing this problem is not a high priority for the school system. It's been 30 years since the district shut down the middle school in southwest Fresno and bused neighborhood children across town to meet federal desegregation goals. That has meant that for three decades, middle school students in that community have had to spend as much as 30 minutes on buses each way during their middle school years. The district has plans to one day remedy the problem, but they are years off. So we understand the frustration of southwest Fresno parents who pleaded for a new middle school at last week's school board meeting. (more...)
