Oxnard school tax measure is dead, but problems persist

For weeks, William Reed led a committee in support of Measure E, an Oxnard School District parcel tax defeated at the polls Tuesday. Reed, whose wife teaches in the district and whose three kids went through local schools, put his businesses on hold to spend hours every day garnering support for the measure that would have provided a cash infusion to local schools struggling with steep funding cuts. The $99 annual tax on every parcel of property in the district would have raised $3 million annually for four years. But with all precincts counted Tuesday, Measure E failed with 3,869 no votes, or 53.2 percent, and 3,406 yes votes, or 46.8 percent. It needed a two-thirds approval to pass.
