State aiming to push forward with grant plan

State lawmakers are moving forward with a plan to become eligible for hundreds of millions in federal education grants, but they're doing so over the objections of many local teachers unions and school officials who say the state is rushing to make complex, systemwide changes before January. This week, the Assembly Education Committee will hold its final hearing on how the state must change its laws to be eligible for the federal Race to the Top grant program. The committee will likely vote Dec. 9 on legislation aimed at making those changes, and the whole Assembly will likely vote sometime next month, said Assembly Speaker Karen Bass, D-Los Angeles. "I'm confident we will have effective legislation to vote on in December," she said. (more...)
