Long Beach teachers gather for another layoff hearing

Elementary school teacher Sandra Irwin on Thursday had one number on her mind: 1,163. That was her place on the 845-page teacher "seniority" list that will largely determine which teachers in the Long Beach Unified School District will lose their jobs at the end of the year. The district has warned 849 employees, mostly teachers, that their jobs are at risk. Under state law, layoffs generally are done by seniority, with the most junior teachers losing their jobs first. On Thursday, Irwin and more than 400 other teachers gathered at Wilson High School for the the second day of hearings in which they can contest their layoff warning notices before an administrative law judge.
