Teacher merit pay captures attention across U.S.

As a nation tentatively moves in the direction of judging teachers by the test scores of their students, Florida lawmakers have positioned the state at the forefront with polarizing legislation that awaits action by Gov. Charlie Crist. He has until Friday to decide whether to sign or veto a bill that abolishes tenure and ties teacher evaluations to student performance. `SB 6 would be the most sweeping statewide approach,'' said Rob Weil, deputy director of educational issues for the American Federation of Teachers, which opposes the bill. ``SB 6 says all in.''
