Revised AP courses stress ideas, not facts

Advanced Placement courses will change over the next few years, focusing more on concepts and less on memorization. The college-level courses, which students take in high school, have long been criticized for being “a mile wide and an inch deep.” The updated courses, which will debut in 2011, should help students gain a deeper understanding of what they’re studying, whether it’s science or history, said Jeff Chancer, an assistant superintendent in the Ventura Unified School District.
