2 school districts use job-creation funds for employee bonuses

Employees of Sacramento County's two largest school districts will soon have extra money in their pockets, thanks to one-time federal stimulus dollars meant to create education jobs. Elk Grove Unified and Sacramento City Unified are planning to spend a portion of the Education Jobs Fund money they received in September to cut checks to their staff. "Our employees – from top to bottom – gave significant concessions: furlough days, salary rollbacks or a freeze in step of column, out-of-pocket health benefits – we think, the most significant in the region," said Glen DeGraw, Elk Grove's assistant superintendent of human resources. "We want to give a portion back to employees." The district is offering its eligible employees a chance to split 45 percent – or about $5 million – of the $10.6 million it has received in federal jobs funds. (more…)
