8 O.C. school districts in the red; more likely to follow

At least eight school districts across Orange County filed preliminary spending plans with the county Wednesday indicating they are unsure they can meet their financial obligations over the next two years. The majority of school districts, though, expressed optimism in their Dec. 15 filing, with at least 17 saying they anticipated being able to stay in the black through June 2013. The initial budget filings indicate that O.C. districts are feeling about the same about their financial footing as they did at this time last year, when nine districts indicated they may not achieve balanced budgets. Even so, this rug of relative stability is expected to be pulled out from under school districts' feet next month, when Gov.-elect Jerry Brown releases his proposed state budget that is likely to call for massive cuts to K-12 schools, said Orange County schools Superintendent Bill Habermehl.
