Music, busing and teachers may be cut in South Bay

Administrators in the South Bay Union School District are trying to close a potential $5.4-million gap in next year’s $65.2 million operating budget. On the chopping block: up to 23 kindergarten through third grade teachers; eliminating busing for most students; and cutting the entire music program. Not included in proposals discussed last week were additional cuts to special education, the superintendent’s salary — which stands at $179,700 — and fourth through sixth grade teachers, since their classes are already at the maximum class size mandated by the California Education Code. The district already has instituted seven teacher furlough days, eliminated offerings like the grandparent support program and increased class sizes to 24 for kindergarten through third grade and 33 for fourth through sixth grade.
