Sacramento's Natomas school district appears headed for bankruptcy

By missing a key deadline, Natomas Unified has set in motion the process for the state to take over the local school district. The deadline for Natomas Unified to find $8.9 million to stave off bankruptcy passed Tuesday. On Wednesday, Sacramento County Superintendent of Schools Dave Gordon met with the state's Fiscal Crisis Management Team to negotiate the details of state receivership. Meanwhile, in Natomas, school district officials and the teachers union tried to come to terms on concessions to bridge the budget gap. The district had previously asked staff to take a 7.9 percent pay cut and teachers countered with an offer of 4.86 percent last month. Wednesday there was still no agreement, although Superintendent Bobbie Plough said talks that day were "healthy, vigorous and substantial." (more…)
