Miriam Flores is a 42 year old Mexican immigrant who worried, as any Hispanic mother would, about her children's education, and has taken the issue of English as a Second Language to the highest courts of the land. Flores, mother of three girls and living in the border town of Nogales for more than 20 years, is the woman behind the case Flores vs. Arizona which demands additional funds for English as Second Language programs. In 1992, several Hispanic families, among them Flores' filed a lawsuit against the Nogales Unified School District stating that it was violating the rights of ESL students, limiting their oportunity to succeed in school.
