Math, reading gap among Native American students

Native American students at schools overseen by the federal Bureau of Indian Education performed significantly worse on national standardized tests in reading and math compared with those in public schools. The division operates 59 schools and oversees another 124 that are run by tribes. A U.S. Department of Education report released Wednesday found that Native American students at these schools scored 20 points lower in fourth grade math on the National Assessment of Educational Progress in 2009.
