Cathie Black or Joel Klein, Mayor Bloomberg needs to correct his school reform strategy

The deal between state Education Commissioner David Steiner and Mayor Bloomberg to appoint experienced educator Shael Polakow-Suransky as Cathie Black's deputy may have settled the question of who will be the next schools chancellor of New York City. However, it has not ended the debate over whether Black - a publishing executive with no experience in public education - will, in fact, be able to handle the enormous challenges she will face. The transition in leadership offers a time to consider the pressing challenges facing schools throughout the city and whether a new approach is needed to address problems that have not been solved under mayoral control. It is likely that Bloomberg believes that there is no need to deviate from the path departing Schools Chancellor Joel Klein pioneered. The next chancellor will need to chart a new direction, building upon what has worked and discarding what has not. (more…)
