Oakland teachers vote in small numbers of authorize a strike

Oakland teachers on Tuesday evening authorized its union leadership to call a strike, although less than 15 percent of the membership voted and leaders said a strike is not imminent. The strike proposal won 79 percent of the vote. Betty Olson-Jones, president of the Oakland Education Association, said the union decided to hold another election this fall to reaffirm an authorization vote taken this spring. "The sentiment for a strike at this time is very very weak," she said after Tuesday's vote. Of the union's 2,800 members, 341 voted at a membership meeting held at Oakland Technical High School in North Oakland. This spring, more than two years after negotiations began, the school board voted unanimously to impose a contract on the union with no changes to pay or benefits. Teachers held a one-day strike in April, demanding raises, small class sizes and continued funding for adult education programs. (more…)
