Orange County Register to publish school salaries, names

In less than two weeks, the Orange County Register will publish the first in a series of stories about compensation paid to the nearly 72,000 employees of our 27 local school districts and the county Department of Education. The package, which has already generated much discussion among school employees, uses data obtained via a Public Records Act request from the county department and supplementary data requests fulfilled by the local districts. The package will include news stories and databases that will eventually publish the 2009-10 gross earnings of every school employee who earns $25,000 or more, their titles, work locations and, where possible, their step and column levels, education and experience in their district, as well as comparison earnings from previous years.
