Report shows charter schools on the rise

Los Angeles Unified continues to serve more charter school students than any other district in the nation, with just over 68,000 children enrolled at the independent, publicly funded campuses, according to a new report released Monday. Produced by the National Alliance of Charter Schools, the report said that as of the 2009-10 school year, one out of every 10 students at LAUSD was enrolled at a charter school. The high prevalence of charters presents financial challenges for LAUSD because the alternative schools are funded independently and are not required to hire district staff. However, charter school advocates said the strong growth over the years is a sign that the once-experimental schools are here to stay. (more…)
