S.D. Unified’s deficit shrinks; cuts still loom

San Diego Unified officials reiterated Thursday that the district’s budget deficit would almost certainly affect classrooms starting next year. Though the district originally projected a $141 million hole, officials now say it’s closer to $120 million. The smaller deficit doesn’t mean cuts will spare student programs, said Phil Stover, the district’s deputy superintendent of business. The district has already identified $137 million in cuts, with 90 percent of that being classroom-based, such as laying off teachers, closing schools and ending gifted and talented education programs. Stover said site administrators could be given the power to determine cuts at their own schools, but some board members disagreed, saying it would lead to inequity across the district. Another special budget meeting will be held next week, but a date was not determined. The board must vote on a preliminary list of cuts by Nov. 16. (more…)
