San Diego Unified OK's preliminary list of budget cuts

Despite a nearly unanimous vote for $146 million worth of cuts to the San Diego Unified School District’s budget, it is still unclear exactly which programs and personnel will be eliminated next fall. The board on Tuesday voted 4-1, with John de Beck dissenting, to approve a preliminary list of sweeping cuts to district programs and offices for the 2010-11 budget on the condition that trustees would still have room to alter those cuts throughout the spring. The district’s final budget is due to the County Office of Education in June. This year will mark the fifth straight year of reductions across the district. With a roughly $120 million budget shortfall, board members and district officials have said that after years of putting off cuts in the classroom, such measures can no longer be ignored.
