Unified school board looks at ways to shrink deficit without new tax

Up to 1,000 teachers would be laid off. Kindergarten would revert to half-day sessions. Classrooms would grow even more crowded. Not exactly the kind of campaign promises politicians want to keep. But devastating classroom cuts looming in the San Diego Unified School District were the driving force behind the Proposition J parcel tax that was defeated at the polls Tuesday. However, school officials are saying the deficit, while bad, may not be as steep as the $141 million they once anticipated. A majority of voters — 50.15 percent — supported the ballot measure, but Proposition J was unable to secure the two-thirds majority it needed to win. The electorate also apparently ousted the two most veteran San Diego school trustees, though still-incomplete election returns show one race still very close. Today, the current school board — including those two members — will begin discussing how to cope with next year’s grim budget, without any relief from a parcel tax. (more…)
