Voters reject school tax proposal

The Proposition J parcel tax measure that would minimize budget cuts to San Diego schools next year was defeated Tuesday, leaving many education advocates worried about a fiscal crisis. The San Diego Unified School District’s tax needed a steep two-thirds approval from voters but was failing to reach a simple majority, according to partial returns. Without relief from Proposition J, the school board now must consider deep program cuts, layoffs, school closures and other measures to offset an estimated $141 million deficit to next year’s $1.1 billion operating budget. Although the parcel tax was never billed as the cure to the district’s financial troubles, the revenue — $50 million annually for five years — would have staved off some of the most debilitating cuts.
