3 Pasadena schools to close; school district officials will hear what people have to say

In forums planned for tonight and Friday, Pasadena schools officials will hear what people have to say about a district decision to close three schools. Budget cuts and a drop in enrollment, says Pasadena Unified Superintendent Edwin Diaz, are forcing the school district to shut down the campuses. It will be extremely difficult, it will be emotional," Diaz said. "It’s going to be highly impactful for parents and for students. The best that we’re hoping for is that we make this decision in a transparent way that is based on facts and real data." Diaz says the most important fact is that more than half a dozen elementary schools in the district enroll fewer than 300 students. He adds that these smaller campuses are more expensive to operate. Teachers at the closed schools won’t lose their jobs, but principals and support staff will. (more…)
