Antioch school district still at risk of state intervention

Despite the largest gains in student test scores in eight years, the school district here remains subject to intervention from the state for failing to meet federal standards for student progress. Antioch Unified is in its third year of program improvement, a designation for districts that fail to meet federal benchmarks for two consecutive years under the No Child Left Behind Act. The district could face corrective action later this year from the state superintendent, including replacing district personnel, appointing a state trustee to run the district, or transferring students to higher-performing schools within the district, said Stephanie Anello, the district's director of program improvement. The district has started reforming its own schools by "making changes midcourse" and using the state's recommendations, Superintendent Donald Gill said. (more…)
