Despite capital region layoffs, a teacher shortage looms

Even as laid-off teachers scour job ads, education experts say school districts are likely to face a massive teacher shortage when the economy recovers. Far fewer college graduates are entering teacher credentialing programs even as a wave of teacher retirements is predicted to hit in the next few years. "With the continuing baby boomer retirements and an uptick of young children coming into the public education system, we are far more likely to not have the teachers we need," said Margaret Gaston, president of the Center for the Future of Teaching and Learning, a California public policy organization that has been sounding alarms on the predicted teacher shortage.
