Former St. HOPE leader starts push for 10 charter schools in Sacramento County

Margaret Fortune, who spearheaded the controversial drive to remake Sacramento High School into a charter school, is planning to open 10 charter schools in Sacramento County aimed at improving the academic achievement of African American students. "We have to do something dramatic to close the African American achievement gap in this county," said Fortune, who is a former education adviser to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Democratic Gov. Gray Davis. "If we do that, we will have a statewide impact because Sacramento County has the third largest African American student population in the state." (more…)
