Harsh fiscal lessons for UC students

It all started with $2,514. That's the cost of the 32 percent tuition increase for undergraduates that took effect this fall at the University of California - an amount that inspired thousands of students to walk out of class last year, occupy campus buildings and march on Sacramento to demand that lawmakers pay attention. It is also the figure that has come to symbolize paying more for less, as public universities across the state lay off thousands of employees and turn away more students to cope with reduced funding from Sacramento. Today, students and faculty are again planning to walk out of UC and other public campuses statewide, protesting conditions in which a top-quality college education in California is growing beyond the reach of many working people.
