LBUSD reaches tentative deal with non-teacher union on furloughs

The Long Beach Unified School District has reached a tentative agreement with the California School Employees Association Long Beach Chapter 2 that promises to suspend layoffs and restore jobs in exchange for furlough days, officials said Wednesday. The CSEA union represents custodians, maintenance workers, cafeteria workers, groundskeepers, bus and truck drivers, mechanics, instructional assistants, warehouse workers and other school support staff. The union has been in negotiations with the school district since May. The tentative agreement will go into effect if ratified by the union's membership and the Long Beach Board of Education in the coming weeks. As part of the deal, LBUSD would suspend layoffs through the 2011-2012 fiscal year and restore about 15 jobs lost as a result of prior cuts. In exchange, the union agreed to take five furlough days this school year and up to seven furlough days next year. If the state reduces LBUSD's funding by $50 or more per pupil, however, negotiations may be reopened, said LBUSD spokesman Chris Eftychiou. (more…)
