Natomas schools' choice: Cut, or see state takeover

Natomas Unified School District faces being taken over by the state if officials there can't persuade teachers and staff to take big pay cuts by a Nov. 30 deadline for balancing its budget. District officials have asked all employees to take an 11 percent pay cut to help plug a $11.4 million budget deficit. So far, the district's unrepresented staff – mainly management – have agreed to take 15 furlough days and additional pay cuts. Total savings: about $400,000, said Superintendent Bobbie Plough. That leaves $11 million. "It's a very small portion of their staff," said Dave Gordon, county superintendent of schools. "They need major cuts from the represented (union) employees, cuts of some magnitude." (more…)
