New math certificates to bolster instruction

The Commission on Teacher Credentialing has approved a new certificate program in math with the aim of improving instruction so that young students are better prepared to succeed in Algebra I. The program is an acknowledgment that many elementary teachers don’t grasp or can’t explain the abstract concepts that are key to understanding algebra. At its meeting last week, the commission approved a panel of math experts’ recommendations for creating two certificates for credentialed teachers, one building on the other. The commission’s hope is that a year from now, university schools of education, districts and county offices of education will offer what’s expected to be 12-unit programs, requiring roughly 180 hours of study, based on course standards that the Commission has approved.
