S.D. school board passes nondiscrimination policy

In response to a nationwide string of suicides of gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender youth, San Diego city schools adopted a nondiscrimination policy Tuesday that aims to protect its own LGBT community. The policy outlines the district’s intolerance for bullying and harassment of LGBT students, teachers and administrators and requires the superintendent to work with community groups to create sensitivity training for district staff that “includes a discussion about sexual orientation and gender identity or expression.” Officials noted reports that 11 gay teens across the country committed suicide after being bullied for their sexuality. According to a survey cited in the district’s new policy, 85 percent of LGBT students have reported being verbally harassed at school because of their sexual orientation. (more…)
