Santa Cruz City Schools seeks to address access and equity in relation to fundraising at district's four elementary schools

Santa Cruz City Schools leaders are grappling with how to strike a balance among the four elementary schools that differ significantly in parental involvement, donations and fundraising. Such differences have led to opportunities and special experiences for some students that aren't shared districtwide. Extra art programs, dance classes and other activities outside the basic curriculum are seen primarily at schools in more affluent neighborhoods such as the upper Westside, trustee Cynthia Hawthorne said. "We've been talking about this for years since the district closed two elementary schools and redrew the boundaries," Hawthorne said. "The reality is Bay View and Gault draw heavily on people in Beach Flats, and the outcome is we don't have much racially, economically balanced schools." (more…)
